I am just wondering how close the site to the rail roads – noise consideration.

Good point Scorpio, According to this Google Map there are tracks to the South and West. It looks like the closest tracks are about 150m away from the building to the West.

I live in the area and those tracks are quite busy and trains are heavy freight trains and can be very noisy. Depending on what side you are on it ’s something to consider.

I want to purchase here but I’m afraid they’ll never finish the project. Every time I drive by it looks the same.

I just purchased here and my biggest concern was the neighbourhood. Other than the city census info, anyone have any idea where to look?

Toronto Life has neighbourhood profiles online. Looks like this one is the closest to covering the Foundry location.

I work beside both tracks, like 20 parked cars away from each track. It’s only annoying when the trains blow their horns, or the go train dings its bells. But I haven’t heard them do that for weeks, it must only be when workers are there on the tracks that the honk. But even that’s okay if you shut your windows and they’re properly insulated.

Ok, so what is the verdict? Are these lofts a quiet enough, and safe enough place for a single woman to live? Or are they noisy and the neighbourhood unsafe?
I would love to hear from people who live there and their thoughts.

I was born around the corner from the old GE plant and have lived there for 47 years.
Back in the old days, there were many concerns about the pollution created in the old junction.
When it snowed, the snow wasn’t white, but a pale yellow.
Lead contamination was always a concern in the area…so take this into consideration.
And the neighbourhood…well its gone down hill.

I have lived at foundry lofts since Nov 2008 and I love it there. I did some extensive research regarding cleanup of contaminates nearby. The building itself wasn’t a problem but I believe the area nearby (where they are currently digging) had some spillage in the 80’s. Fortunately there is a bedrock of clay that would catch the spillage before it became impossible to dig out, so as long as they dig to that bedrock (which they are) they’re good.
I believe most of the soil, and disused equipment, etc, was trucked off to Northern Quebec to be burned. Ontario has strict environmental regulations governing residential areas and as such all water (pipes are all new for Foundry Lofts anyway) and soil (to a beyond acceptable depth) had to pass testing, which it did no problems. Soil and water contaminants are not a concern there anymore; if they were, there would be no residential construction happening there.
As for the neighbourhood, I am male and have had no problems at all. All I ever see are people walking dogs, kids running around, etc. Nice and quiet, beautiful even with the old buildings at sunset. I can’t tell you what a treat it is to live right in the middle of all that. The Lofts are just now implementing more security measures which will add an extra layer of safety. The single women I’ve talked to in the building have had no problems in the area either.
My suggestion if you’re planning to buy in this area: don’t take my word for it, or the words of other randomly opinionated people on the internet. Call the city and find out what environmental tests were conducted and passed. Talk to the police about what random crime occurs in the area. Talk to residents of the building. Best of luck in your search for a beautiful living space!
(Also no noise from trains, and I am SW corner. QUIET, seriously. Street noise from Lansdowne or Davenport might be annoying but I don’t face either of those streets and as such cannot comment.)
