Active 18, Queen West neighbourhood advocates
For anyone interested in development in Toronto in general, or in particular the development of the Queen W. triangle which includes West Side Lofts and others, Active 18 are an organisation worth checking out.
What is Active 18?
Active18 is a citizens, residents and business-owners association of Ward 18. We have formed quickly to answer to proposed development located south of Queen St West in the Queen Street Triangle.
What We Stand For?
We demand and deserve a LIVABLE CITY which reflects the needs of our ward and the people who use it.
Ward 18 is presented with the unprecedented opportunity of being involved in the shaping of this neighborhood. The fact that these proposals have come in together is the good and bad news. We want to make sure it is the good news.
Development is always a prickly issue, and Active 18 seem to have lots of constructive ideas on how to make it work in the Queen St W area. I wish them every success, it would be an awful shame if this new development harmed what is a flourishing, mixed-use community.
Toronto needs more thinking about how we can keep our neighbourhoods truly livable, while accepting the fact that urban densification is an important principle.

I and my husband recently put downpayments on 2 Live/work loft spaces at Westside. My husband is a musician/teacher and I am a photographer. I liked the proposal for the site and loved the idea of a pedestrian bridge connecting King and Queen. Have lived in Riverdale for 20 years raising a family, but we both have always been drawn to that end of town for the obvious reasons.
I have major concerns about these other developements going on in the triangle in particular at 48 Abell and the Bohemian monstrosity on Queen. This will impact on us as new residents but more importantly the area itself is at risk for runaway condo excess. I fear there’ll be changes to the Westside development as well that will change the character and appeal that first attracted us to the project.
I know I should be nervous. Should I back out?

I agree Diane. I was really disappointed with the OMB’s decision, horribly short sighted and lacking imagination in my opinion.

Diane Aubie, did you back out with the new changes now being proposed as of November 2007 now that the project has been renamed Westside Gallery lofts?
